Waiwaia ngā ngutu celebrates the eloquence and expression of te reo Māori from the nineteenth century to the present day. This film brings the written word to life to affirm the essence of te reo Māori: a language heard and spoken through the shared taonga from Auckland Libraries Heritage Collections.
We view hand-written manuscripts of pūrākau and kōrero tupuna, early publications of Māori grammar books and Bibles, Waiata and Karakia, Māori students’ copybooks for learning te reo in written form, and contemporary translations of English works into te reo Māori.
