Award-winning Korean American filmmaker Michael Kang is best known for directing The Motel, which premiered at Sundance and won the Humanitas Prize and a string of festival jury awards has central themes of Asian American identity, family, isolation, masculinity and the awkwardness of adolescence. Kang also co-wrote and directed West 32nd, a 2007 Korean American crime thriller set in New York’s Koreatown. Centred on West 32nd Street, this film, starring John Cho, Jun-ho Jeong and Grace Park, follows an ambitious Korean American lawyer who becomes involved in a murder investigation and is drawn into the neighbourhood’s criminal underworld. It premiered at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival and explores identity, ambition, cultural belonging and tensions between Korean and Korean American communities. The film's title, West 32nd, refers to the Manhattan street at the heart of New York’s Koreatown. Michael Kang is currently Visiting Professor and Graduate Director of Film and Television Production at Loyola Marymount University.
