World Environment Day is the United Nations Day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action. This year's theme for the 45th World Environment Day is Beat Air Pollution - a call for action to combat the global crisis for access to fresh air for all.
Air pollution is a key environmental issue facing the Earth. For World Environment Day this year people are invited to consider how lifestyles and the environment can be improved by beating air pollution.
Last year's theme of World Environment Day was Beat Plastic Pollution, another crisis worthy of global attention and this year, the focus is concentrated on air pollution with the following in mind:
- 7 million people per year die prematurely as a result of air pollution (UN Environment Report)
- 4 billion people die in the Asia Pacific region
- 3 trillion trees live on Earth, but rapid deforestation increases daily
- Capital cities of countries such as India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and others are the most severely polluted
- Nine out of ten people worldwide are exposed to differing levels of air pollutants that exceed safe levels set by WHO.
"Air pollution is a global emergency affecting everyone" according to Joyce Msuya, UN Environment Acting Executive Director and Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations “Often you can’t even see it, but air pollution is everywhere. We can't stop breathing, but we can do something about the quality of our air."
