Would you go eighty kilometres out to sea, to face conditions you cannot predict, to catch the perfect wave? These men would…and do. Tom Carroll and Ross Clarke-Jones are famous throughout the surfing world. As young men, they both competed in world-class competitions. Now, the two men spend their time seeking out and riding the biggest waves they can find. Filmmakers Justin McMillan and Christopher Nelius have been following them on their journey.

"Storm Surfers" is an epic, real-life adventure following two best friends on their quest to hunt down and ride the biggest and most dangerous waves in Australia.

Storm Surfers is the third documentary McMillan and Nelius have made about this irascible pair, after Storm Surfers: Dangerous Banks in 2008 and Storm Surfers: New Zealand in 2009 (both of which aired on Discovery Channel). Storm Surfers is the first feature-length documentary in the series, and the first to get a theatrical release. In it, Tom and Ross, both approaching fifty, face some of their toughest waves yet, and even get a chance to surf a wave no one has ever surfed before. Storm Surfers was made in 3D for its theatrical release, and in 2D the film retains an extraordinary sense of depth. You will be enchanted. As Tom and Ross ride each wave, we are taken on the ride with them, following them through the barrels of the waves. We are privy to angles and views unknown to the non-surfer, and they are stunning. To an outside viewer, the enormous waves look terrifying – these pros, taking their calculated risks, take it all in their stride. Not everything goes perfectly. Tom is recovering from a shoulder injury and no longer takes as many risks as he once would. Ross sometimes gets impatient with his more cautious buddy. The two also give very honest (and to the non-surfer, frightening) descriptions of what it feels like to be held underwater by a wave. But when they are knocked off their boards, they only surface even more determined to conquer. Tom and Ross are fascinating people. Watching them tease, goad and support each other is a great portrait of an enduring friendship. In their individual interviews, both men are charismatic and appealing. Their motivations, their friendship, and their goals are bared for us. There are also some thoughtful moments, particularly as Tom reflects on his age and his responsibilities to his family. But this pair aren’t going to slow down any time soon. This is a modern adventure story, a rip-roaring yarn full of challenges, friendship and blue skies.
