With the Internet surpassing print as our main news source and newspapers all over the country going bankrupt, "Page One" chronicles the transformation of the media industry...
Established in 1851, The New York Times is an American institution. Throughout its long history, its reporters and content have been among the best in the business. Stories and opinions that had their genesis in the pages of “The New York Times” are widely imitated across the world. But in the digital age, things are changing. Instant news feeds like Twitter break news faster than a print newspaper can publish it. Aggregation sites collect together news stories from around the world that readers can access without ever going to the original source. Audiences are reading in new ways – on phones and tablets. In this rapidly changing environment, “The New York Times” must change its format without changing its values.
Rossi follows editors and reporters at the newspaper for a year, watching as they deal with numerous challenges. One of the most fascinating is the way they deal with WikiLeaks storming onto the scene by releasing their infamous “Collateral Murder” video of the deaths of civilians in Iraq. Once, The New York Times was instrumental in important information leaks like “The Pentagon Papers” (for more check out Judith Ehrlich’s documentary “The Most Dangerous Man in America”). Now, whistle-blowers no longer need newspapers to help them. Throughout the course of the year, the relationship between The New York Times and WikiLeaks takes an interesting path.
The above is only a small example of the fascinating story of a year in one of the world’s most famous newspapers. “Page One: Inside the New York Times” is thought-provoking and absorbing.
