Chicago came alive for the American Libraries Association (ALA) Conference from June 22-27 2023, with an exceptional gathering of professionals in the field of library and information science. Beamafilm was pleased to be able to participate in the conference which brought together librarians, educators, researchers, vendors and industry experts from across America and worldwide within a vibrant and collaborative environment that was informative, engaging, and inspiring for all parties involved.
Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias took centre stage at the ALA opening ceremony with an empowering presentation on the state's groundbreaking legislation. Effective January 1, 2024, Illinois public libraries that engage in the restriction or banning of materials due to partisan or doctrinal disapproval will lose eligibility for state funding. Giannoulias, also the state librarian, was the driving force behind this transformative law.
The significance of this law becomes even more apparent as the nation grapples with the removal of books, particularly those addressing LGBTQ+ themes and created by people of color, from schools and libraries. The American Library Association reported that attempts to censor books reached a 20-year high in 2022, doubling the previous record set in 2021.
To qualify for state funds, Illinois public libraries must adopt the American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights or a similar pledge, affirming that materials should not be excluded based on the origin, background, or views of those involved in their creation. Giannoulias's presentation at the ALA highlighted the bold steps Illinois is taking to combat censorship and create an inclusive literary environment, reminding us of the essential role libraries play in nurturing knowledge, diversity, and freedom of expression.
Another keynote speaker at the opening day event was the author Judy Blume who shared her profound connection with generations of young readers in a riveting discussion on the complexities of literary freedom and the profound influence it holds over our collective imagination.
The diverse range of sessions and presentations was thoughtfully curated, covering a wide range of pressing topics relevant to the modern library landscape. Discussions focused on topics such as emerging technologies and new strategies for community engagement, through which attendees were able to access an abundance of valuable knowledge and insights. Throughout the conference, renowned library thought leaders shared their expertise, addressing key challenges and opportunities faced by libraries today. Their presentations were thought-provoking and the speakers' ability to connect with the attendees and spark meaningful conversations was truly commendable.
The exhibition hall provided a platform for vendors and publishers to showcase their latest products, services, and innovations and for attendees to explore new technologies, discover exciting resources, and engage in meaningful conversations with industry representatives.
Networking opportunities were abundant throughout the conference. From organized social events to informal meetups, attendees had numerous chances to connect with colleagues, exchange ideas, and establish valuable professional connections. The conference fostered a strong sense of community, and the spirit of collaboration was evident in every interaction.
ALA 2023 emphasized inclusivity and diversity wherever possible. The program featured sessions dedicated to equity, accessibility, and social justice in libraries, addressing the needs of underserved communities and promoting inclusivity within the profession. The conference organizers should be applauded for their commitment to creating an environment that values diversity and actively seeks to overcome barriers.
One area where the conference could be improved, however, is in providing more interactive and hands-on workshops and in workshops that might expand the diversity of networking opportunities. While the sessions were informative, having more opportunities for participants to engage in practical activities and apply concepts could enhance the overall learning experience.
Overall, ALA 2023 was a resounding success. It provided a platform for library professionals to stay abreast of emerging trends, exchange knowledge, and gain inspiration to drive positive change in their respective institutions. The conference showcased the vibrancy and innovation within the library community and reinforced the vital role that libraries play in society.
Beamafilm looks forward to attending future ALA conferences and witnessing the continued growth and evolution of the vibrant and vital library and gallery professions across the world.
