Bold voices, diverse lives and cinema that celebrates being yourself
On 28 August, Wear It Purple Day celebrates the power of being seen, heard and supported. Founded in Australia, the initiative encourages communities to create safe, inclusive spaces where everyone can feel proud of who they are, or however they identify. At Beamafilm, we’re marking the day with Stories in Full Colour - a vibrant collection of films exploring identity, gender, sexuality, self-expression and belonging.
Cinema has an extraordinary ability to open our eyes to lives beyond our own. It can challenge assumptions, spark conversations and reassure us that there is no single right way to live, love or belong.
The stories in this collection are bold, tender, joyful and thought-provoking. Some celebrate the exhilarating freedom of discovering who you are. Others examine the courage it can take to live authentically in the face of prejudice, social expectations or family pressure. Together, they reflect the many different shades of the human experience.
Celebrate every shade of storytelling
Representation matters, especially for young people searching for characters and experiences that reflect their own lives. Seeing diverse identities portrayed with honesty and humanity can build confidence, foster empathy and remind viewers that nobody should have to hide who they are.
These films also invite families, friends and communities to broaden their understanding of perspectives that may differ from their own.
Bold stories. Proud voices.
Wear It Purple Day is about more than wearing a colour. It is about standing alongside LGBTQIA+ young people and affirming that they deserve to feel safe, valued and proud.
So this Wear It Purple Day, settle in with a film that celebrates individuality, amplifies diverse voices or simply tells a wonderful story from a different point of view.
