With the new Australian government committing to fully embrace the Uluru Statement from the Heart this week, now is the time to build momentum by raising awareness and participating in Reconciliation Week and National Sorry Day.
The Uluru Statement was endorsed by over 250 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders five years ago and the country’s new Indigenous Affairs Minister, Linda Burney, is confident there will now be a referendum on an Indigenous Voice to parliament in the year ahead. She is the first Aboriginal woman in the role and she is optimistic that Australia is poised to create a First Nations body that can advise parliament on Indigenous policies and legislation to embrace constitutional change.
Each year on 26 May National Sorry Day is commemorated to remember and acknowledge The Stolen Generations and the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities. It is a day to acknowledge the strength of the Stolen Generations Survivors and to reflect on the role we can all play in the healing process on behalf of the people and also the nation.
The theme of Reconciliation Week 2022 is “Be Brave. Make Change.” It is a challenge to us all as individuals, as members of communities and as citizens of a government that can embrace reconciliation and 'Make Change' for the benefit of all.
Beamafilm's Reconciliation Week watchlist features a powerful range of indigenous stories from Warwick Thornton's Sweet Country, a period western inspired by true events in the 1929 outback of the Northern Territory to Steven McGregor's Servant or Slave, a remarkable documentary providing insight into the history and legacy of the domestic servitude forced upon Aboriginal Australians as told through the stories of five women.
Stream an important story from the Beamafilm indigenous collection and find the inspiration to be brave and make a change. Join the momentum and embrace reconciliation.
Watch for FREE with a participating library card or on a 30-day trial. Also, you can rent a film for 48 hours.
