Love is in the air today. It's not only Valentine’s Day, a day for celebrating romantic love, but it is also Library Lovers’ Day, an international day for celebrating book lovers, library lovers and lovers of movies based on books. And it's also a time to ramp up for World Pride 2023, a time when communities around the world acknowledge that love is love.
Library Lovers' Day is a time for celebrating libraries across the globe and all the great work they do to enrich and inspire the lives of their communities and the individuals within them through books and electronic resources. And who knew that International Library Lovers’ Day began in Australia in 2006 by the State Library of New South Wales? The Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) also joined their campaign in 2007 and now it's an internationally recognised holiday. Initially, the aim was to raise awareness for all the great services offered by libraries, but it has blossomed into a day for celebrating a love of libraries as a way to augment Valentine’s Day celebrations. The #LibraryLoversDay hashtag is a trending tag on Twitter with a new theme celebrated every year. Annual themes have ranged from ‘Library Love Stories' writing contests to ‘Matchmaking’ events where library staff match readers with books and authors they might fall in love with based on their personality types. ALIA’s theme for Library Lovers Day 2023 is ‘Only YOU’, a day for talking about ways that libraries have enriched your life and for sharing those stories with your library and your networks!
And if that's not enough, today is also a day to ramp up for World Pride (Feb 17-23) a time when the entire world stops to recognise that 'love is love'. This year, for the first time ever, global World Pride Day celebrations are being headquartered in Sydney, Australia on Sat Feb 18 with special activities throughout the entire week ahead.
