Wars are no longer waged solely in the physical world, but online. Most people are at least peripherally aware of the fact that cyberwar exists – but what exactly is it? And what does it entail? How can a war be waged from a keyboard?
Acclaimed documentary maker Alex Gibney asks and answers these questions with “Zero Days”, an exploration of one of the most powerful cyberweapons ever created: Stuxnet.
No country or power has claimed responsibility for Stuxnet, a computer worm which targeted the systems of Iran’s nuclear centrifuges – reportedly ruining almost a fifth of the nuclear centrifuges in Iran. It is suspected to be a joint creation of the United States and Israel. Stuxnet, and a subsequent cyberwar campaign by the United States called “The Olympic Games”, represent the terrifying possibilities of war waged online. As David Fear from The Rolling Stone says: “We have seen the enemy, and it’s written in PHP code.”
