Beyond the Edge

Mount Everest was once unconquerable. The tallest mountain on Earth, many had tried to reach its peak, but none had succeeded. Until, in 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the summit after an ardous journey. It was Hillary’s first attempt at the summit, and Norgay’s sixth.

Director Leanne Pooley’s stunning documentary combines archival and re-enacted footage to tell this extraordinary story. Using original footage of the expedition, drawing on over 3000 still images, and incorporating interviews with many of the climbers, Pooley reconstructed the journey. Dramatic recreations of key events were filmed mostly in the New Zealand Alps, with one camera man sent to film on the great mountain itself.

“Beyond the Edge” is an extraordinary film, effectively capturing one of the greatest moments in human exploration. It also has the seal of approval from Peter Hillary and Norbu Tenzing, the sons of the original climbers.
