John Pilger reveals that the world’s greatest military power, the United States, and the world’s second economic power, China, both nuclear-armed, are on the road to war.
Two of the world’s greatest powers, with two different political ideologies, China and the U.S. have an uneasy relatinship. At the time Pilger made this film, around 400 U.S. military bases encircled China throughout the Asia Pacific. China has also been increasing its military might. Award winning journalist John Pilger asks – is war between these two powers inevitable? Will it involve nuclear weapons? And what would be the fallout? Australia, with strong ties to both countries, would be between a rock and a hard place.
Exploring the history of Chinese-American political relations, and the development of nuclear weapons (particularly the notorious US tests of nuclear weapons on Bikini Atoll), Pilger deftly explores the complexities of the current situation.
In the words of Pilger himself: “The aim of The Coming War on China is to help break the silence. As the centenaries of the First World War presently remind us, horrific conflict can begin all too easily. The difference today is nuclear.”
